Chase and Status - Pieces

Other videos by our artist, Chase and status, that we have both get inspiration from and have the same effects and look that we would like to achieve. One of their songs that is a rather old song now is there big hit, Pieces. At the beginning of the song there is a solo acoustic guitar which continues for the best part of the first verse. This is similar to our song I the way that at the start of the song Heartbeat there is a solo piano intro that slowly sets a mood that will then be broken down further into the song. Within the chase and status song pieces the song slowly builds up a tempo until its suddenly smashed and the tempo rises massively. In their song that is also similar to what we want to achieve is the effect of faster camera shots to make the video look like its moving at the same sort of speed as the song. We intend to create something like this by taking a huge number of shots in and flicking through them to speed up the look of the film. However in our song the beat slows down within the middle of the song that will enable us to try and slow the tempo down and begin to use different camera techniques. Something else within the chase and status song pieces is the way that in the video they manage to over lap a large number of shots to increase the tempo of the video dramatically towards the end of the song where the beat picks up for the last time.

Mise-on-scene

Location

For the location the group and I had a discussion about where would be the most appropriate for what we wanted to be in the video, and for it to be as simple as possible as we would have a large number of props. After the discussion we decided that the best place to shoot the video would be at my house (Campbell’s) this is because I live in an area where I have exclusive access to a barn where we could shoot and adapt the area to whatever we needed it to be with any small adjustments. Another reason that we decided that the best place to shoot was at my house was that in the land there is a big set of woods where in which we could create the necessary scene that we wanted.

Props

As I mentioned within the location section we will need a large number of props throughout are video that will give it the specific look that we want to achieve. Firstly we will be need a stage, on which will be our singer. She will be standing on the stage throughout a huge proportion of the video. We will easily be able to get this stage as I have the perfect stage roughly 1.5 foot high and approximately 10m by 7-8m. Another prop that we will need within the video is a piano. We need this piano for our singer to be playing through the start of the song and to have as number of different shots through the first verse where the tempo of the music is still slow and highly piano orientated. We will be able to get this piano from a number of different sources depending on timings and prices to rent one. Finally one of our most important props that we will need is the UV paint which we will buy from the internet and will use through the video in order to give the video a rave look about it.

Costume and make up

For the video we want to have a new rave like scene, therefore through our video we will sort out appropriate costumes that give the look we want. We will do this by using our own knowledge on what the statement new rave means to us. Also I will be doing some research towards what other people associate new rave with.
As for the makeup as within our group we are 3 men we don’t have a clue about how the make up should be done, however our singer will know exactly how and what sort of make up she would where if she was going out or indeed creating a music video. We will however tell her what we are looking for throughout the video make up wise.

Brainstorming

Upon choosing the song between our group there were lots of great ideas flying around and that a large proportion of them we want to use within our video. However before we rushed into deciding on what ideas we will and wont use, we decided that we should listens to the song a number of times so we could get a better understanding of the layout; to decide where we need a softer and quieter scene to be set and when we will need a much faster and harder section to the song. After deciding on this we used the fresh lyrics that I had sorted to be into the correct order (as it’s a remix no lyrics had been published on the internet) and started to mark the sheet with where we might want to try and use fast or slower clips and shots.

From this very useful activity we then started to look at all the ideas that we individually have for each part. One of the first and most approved ideas that we had was the use of a piano within the introduction and the first verse of the song. This is because at the start of the song there is a nice opening solo on the piano that is slowly accompanied by other instalments that is all illustrated on the sheet that I have uploaded into blogger. However we soon decided that that at the beginning of the song there isn’t enough time to set the correct type of mood/scene before the music starts (if they start at the same time) therefore we will start the video a few second before the song starts in the editing section so that we can have more piano shots.
Another idea that we nearly unanimously decided was; as the song has a big essence of rave within it would be a good idea to involve the use of both UV lighting and UV paint. So after deciding that we would try and involve an essence of UV paint in our video a new song and video was released to the world. This was the new song by “the black eyed peas” after watching the video and seeing that they had the same idea as we did consulting the UV paint it became a great source of inspiration about how we would use it.

Target audience

Chase and Status are a relatively new band that have appeared in the Dubstep genre in recent years. In the Flyer on the left you can see that Chase and Status are performing at a Mixmag Christmas party. Mixmag is renowned as "the world's biggest dance and music magazine“, as it’s tagline states.The target audience for Mixmag is mainly the clubbing age, 18-30, as they would read the magazine to find out when the latest gigs are. So therefore, this is what we belive the target audience to be. there is more evidence of this when we take some further research into the band.

We have found that the band are represented by the company Mercury Records. After discovering this we then started to take a better look at a number of things, what type of bands do the take care of, is there any like from this to the prefered or the specific target audience. After seeing the other types of bands that they look after including such bands as Matalica and Meat loaf we decided that the target audience that we have set for Chase and Status was correct.

Planning

Song choice - The song that the group and i have decided to chose is Nneka - Heartbeat (chase and Status remix). We have chosen this song because we had all agreed that it was a good song and related to all of our tastes, therefore we can all have a big input into the song and produce an amazing video. Another reason that we have chosen this song is that after a lot of research we had discovered that it did not have a video. The final reason that we have chosen this song is because of the diversity of the tempo and the overall tune we decided that there is endless possibilities for this song.

Initial ideas have made a document on word with pictures that best show the ideas that we have all had. as you can see in the top left corner there some lips, the reason for this is that an overall idea or theme that we want running through the video is not only the use of great video angles and movement but also an essence of graphics and animation, with that came one of out first ideas where we will film in on our actress' lips and as the music turns up in tempo turn them in to graphics singing the first section of punchy lyrics.

The rest of the pictures are other good idea that we all had going though our heads. As we all had the dimension of UV lights and glow sticks.

A number of other idea came from reading through the lyrics and trying to uncover what a lot of them mean. These are the lyrics to our song choice:

AS this song is a remix and had no video i had to go through the song and recreate what the lyrics where in order to discover what or if there is any meaning behind them, however after looking into the lyrics and having the knowledge of it being a remix there is no clear meaning from the works being sung. Furthermore saying that

Other initial ideas that we were playing with came from the inspiration of a video clip that we had seen by the band "Black Eyes Peas" and their new song " I gotta feeling". After watching this video a few times we managed to get a couple great ideas.
The first thing that we spotted in the video was the massive use of the UV lighting and UV paint, as all of us already had this sort of image in our minds we decided that it looked really good in there video and wanted to adopt that look of a party or rave. Secondly in the chorus of the video there is a really jumpy stage quite similar to a jumpy beat in our song, this is where we had our second big influence as it looked really good we thought that if it was possible we should use it to represent a fun and party like environment which will fit into our video really nicely.
